Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club Inc
Surf Life Saving Club at Ohope Beach.
 Whakatane
SLSC is a family orientated Club set on one of the safest beaches in the
Eastern Bay of Plenty.
The club embraces the vision and philosophy of New Zealand Surf Life Saving
by providing a proactive methodology aimed at preventing death and injury
in the sea and on the beach. This is attained through both a paid life
guard service during the summer weeks alongside a volunteer service during
the weekends.
Educating the public on beach safety is part of the community service
provided by the club. Young club members participate in a Junior Surf
Programme aimed at enhancing their knowledge of the sea and providing
them with skills and confidence. Along with this patrol  members
assist in the Beach Education Programmes run through local schools.
The club had the honour of being 4th nationally at the 2005 NZ Surf
Life Saving Competition. This was the result of many hours training by
both individual sports people and boat crews. Many medals were brought
home this year. Surf Sport plays a large part in keeping patrol members
fit and ensures their life saving skills are kept up to date.
There are many facets to WSLSC but all are involved in organising, promoting,
instructing, and participating in the safe patrol of Ohope Beach. Monthly
social occasions at the club house are designed to bring everyone together
and relax.
The club has a membership of 200 from nippers to masters. Membership
is open to anyone interested in surf life saving.
