Ohiwa
Harbour is a beautiful, natural environment and enjoyed by many.
Nature watchers can enjoy the wild life and the splendid North Island
scenery. Rosemary
Tully has contributed some excellent notes on bird
watching on the harbour you may wish to read.
Fishermen enjoy netting Flounder and kids often fish
off the Ohiwa wharf.
For holidaymakers it may be a first experience of catching fish and
the close proximity to the camping grounds makes it easy.
The local Portside store is in
walking distance and has all the fishing tackle you will need plus refreshments.
Swimming and diving off the Wharf is a popular pass time for kids but
always check the depth before you leap and respect the users of the
wharf.
The
wharf is no longer used commercially so the Ohiwa Yacht club and tourism
companies use the buildings.
A quality restaurant and takeaway outlet serve meals in an exquisite
environment overlooking the Ohiwa Harbour.
Further down the Harbour is the boat ramp where pleasure
craft launch to enjoy skiing and tubing on the calm waters.
Larger boats are seen moored in the harbour as access to the open waters
is available.
Unfamiliar boaties to the harbour entrance are well advised to use the
Whakatane river bar under the watchful eye of our Whakatane
Coastguard.
Ohope Golf Club is near here and welcome
casual golfers and members.
Across the Harbour entrance, on the eastern shores, you will find Ohiwa
Family Holiday Park who offer superb camping and motels right on
the harbour.
Check our Places to Stay for more
accommodation.
Enjoy
our Harbour and respect the endangered wildlife such as the Dotterels
and the any current shellfish restrictions.
Please leave it unspoiled for future generations.
You are welcome to view our nature pages
and see many of the species that inhabit the Harbour.
