and the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
The Short walk to Otarawairere Bay is one of the most
enjoyed family recreation activities in Ohope.
The walk is part of the Kohi Point walkway, which is
part of the network of walks forming the Nga Tapuwai o Toi or Footsteps
of Toi loop walkway.
Otarawairere is 20 minutes walk up over the headland from west end Ohope.
People of any fitness can enjoy this walk.
Carry on the walk and it will take you over the Kohi Point and down
into the CBD of Whakatane (about 2 hours)
Otarawairere Bay takes on a wonderful atmosphere of seclution, which
is unsual considering its proximity to Ohope and Whakatane. The
Beaches are private, especially in the winter off-season, and divers,
bathers and beachcombers enjoy the sheltered waters, rock pools and
admiring the many shells.
Our local Whakatane Bird rescue lady Rosemary Tully lives in the settlement
that is Otarawairere
above the Bay.
There is access to the coast from there as well. Rosemary
has some notes on this website on Bird
Watching at Otarawairere.
You can easily enjoy a day out with the family at Otarawairere
and we are confident you will respect the
wildlife and the current shellfish and fishing restrictions.
Make sure you take your litter away with you too!
