Whakatane is the main centre of the Eastern Bay of Plenty
and the major service town for visitors and locals to Ohope Beach.
Whakatane rests in the Coastal heart of the Eastern Bay
of Plenty, where locals enjoy the best of the climate and lifestyle
that New Zealand can offer.
Whakatane is on a river of the same name that flows into
the Bay of Plenty and the Pacific Ocean.
The town is only an hour's drive from the tourist city of Rotorua and
coastal Tauranga with it's major export port.
Ohope Beach is less then ten minutes drive over the hill to the east
of Whakatane
Population numbers around 16,800 in Whakatane and approximately
15,000 in the surrounding rural areas.
The
area enjoys high sunshine hours and temperatures are generally between
25 and 28 degrees (Celsius) in the summer months and usually in the
mid teens during winter. We
often record the highest temperature in New Zealand and the region is
often sheltered from the cold frontal systems which seem to affect most
other places in New Zealand.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty is a lifestyle centre with
fishing and coastal activities abundant.
There are many great social venues such as the Whakatane Sport Fishing
Club and plenty of public houses. There
are great sports clubs such as the Whakatane Golf club.
Plenty of great shops with both large chain stores and boutique shopping.
Lots of restaurants as well as all the service clubs you would expect.
