Whakatane's Kiwi population bouncing back

Whakatane's growing Kiwi population in Ohope was in the national news recently. Efforts by the Whakatane Kiwi Trust has seen the number of Kiwi increase from dangerously low numbers. Whakatane is known as The Kiwi Capital of the World, and this has been reconfirmed with the news of an increasing Kiwi population. The Whakatane Kiwi Trust use pest free Moutohora (Whale Island) as a nursery for young chicks to grow without the risk of being killed by pests, then once they are stronger they are released back onto the main land at Ohope.
