Ngā Tapuwae o Toi Walk
Feeling like a challenge?
I’ve got a stunning walk for you, starting with the toughest hill first - trust me, you’ll understand!
The route:
-
Up the hill from Ohope into the bush
-
Across farmland and back into the bush
-
Descend into Whakatane Township, along the main road to the town centre
-
Up to cross the ridge of the Whakatane Heads
-
Down into Otarawairere Bay (low tide access at 1:30pm) - enjoy as long as you like!
-
Back up the hill to the village, then roadside walk down
Meeting point: Base of Ohope Hill (where the old community hall was), Kiwi Bird Walk, corner of Ohope Hill Road and Pohutukawa Ave
Distance & terrain: ~18km, including bush, road, beach, stairs, steep sections, and flat bits. Stunning views make every step worth it!
Bring: Good footwear, water, electrolytes, lunch, snacks, and sunscreen.
Extras: Halfway through at Commerce Street in Whakatane, there’s a chance to stop for drinks, ice blocks, or a loo break before heading back up the hill.
