Ohope Beach, voted NZs best beach, is just 5 minutes drive over the hill from Whakatane. Its a beach break and is best at the west end of the beach where its gets a little more shelter under the hill although there are many other peaks down the beach. Ohope Beach provides variable beach break conditions, depending on tide and sand movement. It can have nice waves ranging from 1-5 feet and is good for surfers of all levels. Ohope is a popular beach in summer so watch out for swimmers.
